PLUSH

Woven or knitted fabric with a long pile, more than 3 mm. The pile is usually acrylic and may be printed to imitate an animal skin. Used as fleecy linings and imitation furs.

Originally the pile of plush consisted of mohair or worsted yarn, bur now silk by itself or with a cotton backing is used for plush, the distinction from velvet being found in the longer and less dense pile of plush.

Modern plush are commonly manufactured from synthetic fibres such as polyester.

PLUSH

Plush (knitted terry fabric) is made by including (plating) an extra yarn which is made to form extended sinker loops. The plated yarn can be knitted at every needle or on selected needles to form pattern.

Cut plush (knitted velour) is made by cutting the plated yarn loops. The fabric surface then resembles velvet (velour). Applications include leisure and children's wear and socks.

TERRY

It is a type of fabric with a plush texture that is soft to the touch and has highly absorbent qualities. Terry cloth features a high loop pile, which may be on one or both sides of the fabric.

It can be manufactured by weaving or knitting. Towelling is woven on special looms that have two beams of longitudinal warp through which the filler or weft is fired laterally.

Clothing manufacturers often use terry cloth to make garments, such as the classic bath robe and slippers, as well as athletics warm-up suits and exercise gear.

The first terry cloth appeared in France in 1841 and was handmade from silk.

PRODUCTION

Plush is a type of cut pile fabric. These are made by using the third yarn system to form a cut fibre pile on the face of the fabric. Fabrics with a short pile are called velvet or velveteen, long-pile fabrics are called plush.

USE

The soft material is largely used for upholstery and furniture purposes, and is also much employed in dress and millinery.

One of the largest uses of this fabric is in the production of stuffed toys, with small plush toys made from plush fabric, such as teddy bears.

It is also one of the main materials for the construction of designer toys.

Plush is also perfect for blankets, modern cloth nappies.
